Cultural highlights Görlitz

One European city, two countries

Görlitz and Zgorzelec, the Polish city on the eastern side of the Neisse, have been a European city since 1998. Together, both provide an example of how people from two nations can overcome borders - both in daily interaction and, for example, at events that take place across borders and exude European flair.

The ViaThea international street theater festival offers special experiences, turning the streets and squares in Görlitz and Zgorzelec into a stage for comedians, acrobats and pantomimes from all over the world. Or the popular old town festival or Jakuby festival as the largest festival in the region. The Neisse Film Festival, the International Messiaen Days and the European Marathon also have a permanent place in the annual calendar.

"Film on" in Görliwood

Did you know that Görlitz has played New York, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Paris, Heidelberg in the film? The city is affectionately known as "Görliwood" because around 100 national and international film productions have been made here since the 1950s.

Filmmakers are enthusiastic about the unique buildings, streets and squares. And film fans even chose Görlitz as the European film location of the decade! The best-known films shot in Görlitz include Oscar-winning Hollywood productions such as "Der Vorleser" with Kate Winslet, Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" or "The Grand Budapest Hotel" by Wes Anderson. Anecdotes about the stars' stay can be found, for example, on the "film from" city tours that lead along the filming locations through Görlitz.

The former open-cast mining pit has been flooded and developed into a perfect vacation paradise over the last ten years: with bathing beaches, hotels, restaurants, a harbor, a high ropes course and a camping site.

Kathi Groll from MDR explores the harbor on the picturesque south-eastern shore of the lake, discovers the former Tauchritz manor as a hip location for weddings and family celebrations and tests the high ropes course at the Blue Lagoon.

Discover one of the most beautiful cities in Germany

In Görlitz, Germany's easternmost city, pearls from 500 years of European architectural history are hidden. The lovingly restored Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings inspire not only visitors, but also national and international film producers on a regular basis. In addition to the fantastic scenery, they particularly appreciate the hospitality of the Görlitzers. Whether at the numerous cultural events in the European flair of the German-Polish European city, in the top-class museums of the city, on a shopping tour or completely relaxed on the beautiful Berzdorf Lake at the gates of the city - Görlitz offers something for everyone.

The hall houses along the historic VIA REGIA trade route are unique to Görlitz. The “merchant palaces” represent a mixture of residential, commercial and representative buildings and give a good impression of what life was like for the well-heeled in the late Middle Ages. 30 of these unique architectural monuments were combined under the title "The Görlitzer Hall Houses on the VIA REGIA" for the application for UNESCO World Heritage status. Did you know that an anonymous patron of the city of Görlitz donated one million DM or half a million euros annually from 1995 to 2016? - the real fairy tale of the old town million. The generous donations were used for the renovation of listed buildings. Thanks to them, thanks to generous funding measures and the private commitment of the Görlitzers, the city shines again in its old splendor.
